The Christmas holiday is often a very busy one at airports throughout the U.S., as millions of travelers fly home for celebrations with family and friends.  Often, flyers are looking for the best, cheapest deals they can get on Christmas flights.  While discounts aren’t the norm around holidays, deals are out there.  With a bit of planning and some research, travelers can find cheap Christmas flights.

When it comes to getting a good deal on flights, there are a few things you can do.  The best approach is to plan early – try to begin searching for deals well ahead of the holiday time period.  Often, airlines will increase prices as the holidays approach.  By allowing yourself some extra time, you may have a greater selection of cheaper flights to choose from.

Book early, if you can.  The closer you get to your departure date, the higher the fare may be.  While this is typically true throughout the year, it is especially important during busy holiday travel periods, including Christmas.

Travel expert Rick Seaney of FareCompare warns that procrastinators in 2010 might face steeper prices and seat shortages if they wait too long to secure Christmas flights.  Seaney recommends that deal-seekers try to fly on the cheapest days, typically Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.  With Christmas, Seaney says flights beginning on December 17, 2010, “are generally sharply higher than flights on earlier days.”

Other tips: be flexible.  If you absolutely have to book a nonstop flight to your Christmas destination, be aware this may be more expensive than booking connecting flights.  Also, consider shipping your gifts ahead, rather than carrying all of them in your luggage.  This adds weight, and this could result in you getting hit with a hefty fee.

Online booking search engines may be helpful as you seek out the best Christmas flight deals.  Websites such as Orbitz.com and Travelocity might be helpful.  You could also check out Farecast and Airfare Watchdog – this may help you keep an eye out for lower priced flights.  If you want to compare flights, sites like Bing.com and SideStep let you see all the deals for multiple airlines to your Christmas destination.
